Industry Veterans Join Katalyst to Build the Next Phase of Space Operations

BROOMFIELD, CO. – April 23, 2026 – Katalyst Space Technologies announced the addition of three senior leaders as it enters its next phase of growth: Dr. Rudranarayan (Rudra) Mukherjee as Chief Architect, Andrew Thompson as Vice President of Operations, and Kevin Smith as Director of Space Systems.

The appointments come as Katalyst transitions from developing core capabilities to deploying them at scale across national security, civil, and commercial missions. Katalyst is focused on what spacecraft can do once on orbit and throughout their operational life, including refueling, upgrading, and supporting space operations to improve U.S. flexibility and resilience on orbit.

Chief Architect

Dr. Mukherjee brings more than 18 years of experience from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), where he served as the lead for In-space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM), NASA System Capability Leadership Team for Rendezvous and Proximity Operations and Capture/Docking (RPO-C/D), and Principal Investigator for various robotics projects. He has led and contributed to major programs including Mars Sample Return, Habitable Worlds Observatory servicing, and lunar robotics, supporting NASA, NOAA, DARPA, and other government agencies.

At Katalyst, Dr. Mukherjee will lead system architecture for capabilities that enable docking, resource transfer, refueling, and coordinated spacecraft operations.

“Katalyst is focused on a fundamental shift—from isolated missions to persistent operations in space,” said Dr. Mukherjee. “The technical building blocks for that future exist, but they have not yet been integrated into a scalable operational model. This is the right moment to do that.”

Vice President of Operations

As Katalyst builds the systems required to scale these capabilities, Andrew Thompson joins as Vice President of Operations. With leadership experience at multiple early-stage space companies, he will lead the development of infrastructure to drive consistent execution and growth across business operations and manufacturing.

“Katalyst has reached a stage where execution discipline becomes a primary driver of growth,” said Thompson. “The opportunity is to build the operational backbone that allows for consistent delivery at scale. The timing is right, and the demand signal is clear.”

Director of Space Systems

As part of Katalyst’s approach to delivering on-orbit capabilities, Kevin Smith joins as Director of Space Systems, bringing experience in propulsion and spacecraft development from roles at Orbit Fab, Astrobotic, and Moog Space and Defense. He will lead the development of Katalyst’s modular applications for robotic servicing, which include refueling, space superiority, and sensing capabilities.
